Dose Of Good News

With the reports of General Petraeus and Ambassador Crocker out now I believe there is reason for hope in Iraq. Of course I am a biased source as I have always believed Iraq was the right place at the right time. However, even liberals seem to acknowledge that we have to stay in Iraq for some time longer in order to prevent a complete catastrophe. I am enthusiastically optimistic these days and am excited to see what happens in Iraq in the years to come now that Petraeus is in charge and it seems that his recommendations will be followed.

Here is an article that I read today that gives further cause for believing we are headed in the right direction with Iraq. In the article James Lewis writes about the continual defeats Al Qaeda has suffered in Iraq and concludes that Iraq is where we need to be to fight the larger war on terror in general.

In D.C.
I arrived in D.C. earlier this morning to take part in the sponsored activities of Vets For Freedom. After looking at my itinerary I see that tomorrow I will be having breakfast at the White House followed by meetings with my congressmen and a couple representatives. Should be a fun day, but above all I hope to talk some sense into some wobbly politicians from my home state. The outlook is doubtful.

I`ll be sure to check back in after the meetings to let everyone know how they went. Now if I could just weasel my way into the meetings with Kerry and Murtha I would have a few choice words for those guys.

Initial Reactions
After a day of lounging around waiting for the festivities to commence I was blown away by the dinner we had featuring two democrat senators, a retired army general, one of the architects of "The Surge", and several highly esteemed Iraq war vets.

What pleased me most about the night was that every speaker cut the crap and got right to their points. There was no mixing of words and no sugar coating, especially from Fred Kagan of the American Enterprise Institute. Exactly what I expect of a military gathering. General Jack Kean (U.S. Army, Ret.) former Vice Chief of Staff was a pleasure to listen to as he is the most knowledgeable man I have ever listened to in person speak about Iraq. He made apologies for the mistakes he and his colleagues made in Iraq and gave credit where credit was due. His message ended with the resounding statement that what we are doing in Iraq now is the right course of action and as a result we are winning-a message that all of the speakers shared (if you aren`t encouraged by these words then wake up!). Kean said that 2007 is the best year by far in Iraq and he can only imagine what 2008 will be like if we continue with the current strategy.

Congressman Brian Baird (D-WA) and Congressman Jim Marshall (D-GA) both spoke and won my admiration for their courage to speak out in support of the mission in Iraq with clarity and forcefulness amidst a party that so viciously condemns such actions. In particular Baird voted against the war in 2003 but stated that once we went to war he was behind it all the way. He realizes that what we are engaged in is bigger than politics and needs to be treated with the utmost seriousness as our Nation`s interests are at stake. Obviously he was much more eloquent than I. All in all both of these men surprised me and showed me that no matter what side of the spectrum we fall on we have to be pro-victory in Iraq or our country will face much greater problems in the future than what we currently are.

Tomorrow I`ll be dining on the White House lawn followed up by meetings with my state Congressmen, I just hope I`ll be impressed tomorrow as I was today, something tells me I won`t.

My Day On Capitol Hill

Today was a special day for myself as well as the rest of the Vets For Freedom members. We started the day off with breakfast on the South Lawn of the White House followed up by a meet and greet with the administration. I personally got to chat with Vice President Cheney for a moment, who incidentally was dramatically less evil than the media makes him out to be, and Condoleezza Rice with whom I discussed the Cleveland Browns win over the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday. Then I headed over to the swarm of people around President Bush, but was unable to get closer than five feet away before we had to take off to Capitol Hill.

Overall I left the White House duly impressed with the administration and saw a side of them that doesn`t often make the news: the engaging, quick-witted, and intelligent side that they all possess in great quantity. I have no doubt that if more Americans could see this side, along with the genuine concern for the troops and their families, they would get behind the Bush administration with greater fervor. Of course I also left with a feeling that our democracy was at work seeing that some common folk like ourselves were able to meet and joke with some of the most powerful people in the world.

As I said once we departed the White House we headed straight for Capitol Hill. Our real mission of the day was not to hang out at the White House (although I wouldn`t have minded a longer stay), but rather, to talk with our Congressmen and women in order to share our beliefs and knowledge about the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. For those of you who don`t know Vets For Freedom is a non-partisan, pro-mission group, interested in supporting our elected officials who have our same goals in mind. That goal is to listen to and follow the recommendations of General Petraeus in order to achieve complete victory in Iraq and Afghanistan before we try to "bring `em home". For those officials who do not see eye to eye with us we seek to share our first hand experience as veterans of OIF and OEF in order to help them become better informed about the decisions they need to make. Before you jump to the conclusion that VFF is simply a shill for the Bush administration you should know that we have and will continue to support democrats who are pro-mission as well.

The essential message of VFF that we shared with our officials is that the surge that General Petraeus implemented has begun to and will continue to work. No matter what we did in the past what is going on now is working and we need to see it through to the end. We made sure to explain that we don`t want war and would love to come home just like most people want, but we do not want to do so unless we leave Iraq and Afghanistan victorious with Al Qaeda whipped and the Iraqi people safe enough to take care of their own country.

Once on Capitol Hill myself along with four other guys from my state met with both of our senators and three of our representatives. All officials were cordial and polite to us and gave us the time to share our ideas. Well all but one that is. Not to out him just yet (I`ll do that and more in upcoming posts) but one senator in particular, a republican at that, spoke at us and ended our conversation by handing us a copy of his most recent resolution for a troop withdraw disguised in pro-victory clothing.

While I was in the meeting with the republicrat VFF held a press conference in Upper Senate Park. Several senators attended including Senator Lieberman, and Senator McCain. As I wasn`t there I can`t give you the rest of their names. Also at the press conference was a small but vocal group of Code Pinkers among other front groups for communists. I usually don`t mind these nut-jobs but the audacity they had to protest a bunch of military veterans along with the mothers and fathers of soldiers was beyond me. We aren`t the policy makers, or even a partisan organization, but they were there nonetheless with their usual crap. I even heard several of them got themselves arrested as they started to get physical (just a side note-getting physical around a bunch of pro-victory veterans is a bad, bad idea). However, all of the VFF guys remained calm and at the end of the day I think it was apparent who the better party was.

As the day wound down I chatted with the leadership of the VFF and was impressed with their work ethic, organizational skills, and zeal for their work. I am proud to call myself a member of their ranks and look forward to working with them in the near future. I heard we are some 7000 strong and growing so any politicians out there who are willing to espouse a pro-victory, pro-Petraeus message in Iraq and Afghanistan know that you have the brave and the bold behind you all the way.

VFF Related Video
While in D.C. I had the pleasure of meeting Townhall blogger Mary Katharine Ham. She made a video of the Vets For Freedom gathering in D.C. earlier this week and yours truly made a guest appearance. Not that I really contributed at all but you`ll see me nonetheless. Be sure to watch the video and check back with her as she has been a big supporter of the troops.

Prolonging The War
From the politicians who call soldiers liars to those who label them murderers I often wonder just how they can be so ignorant. After my trip to Capitol Hill last week I realized a few things about politics. First a word of warning: I am just a citizen soldier not a career politician so maybe I really don’t know what I am saying. With that said let me move on to my point.

Some of the politicians I came into contact with were unable to grasp very simple truths. For instance if anyone were to have listened to General Petraeus and Ambassador Crocker testify before Congress they would have heard that progress is finally being made in Iraq as a result of the surge. Of course things in Iraq are far from perfect but we have tangible progress.

The first night I arrived in D.C. we had a dinner with some distinguished guests. Among them was retired army general Jack Kean. As a man in the know he told us that we have had many failures in Iraq since the start of the war in 2003. Despite our failures we have turned a corner in the war and are now seeing marked progress. He added that wars are never perfect and mistakes have always and will always be made. When he finished talking I realized that for the first time in awhile I was actually excited about our prospects in Iraq. The general added that if we have come this far since the surge started imagine where we will be this time next year. If that type of news coming from a person who is intimately involved with what is going on doesn’t excite you or convince you that what we are doing now because of General Petraeus then you could only be a congressmen.

So what exactly did I learn about politics you may be asking. Well I learned that no matter how much truth some politicians may hear it will never change their minds if they have already made them up. No matter how many times General Petraeus testifies about the progress in Iraq, Senator Harry Reid will condemn our military’s work as a failure. No matter how many marines are acquitted of charges stemming from their actions in Haditha, Congressmen Murtha will still call them murderers.

The problem with our engagement in Iraq is not the lack of political progress there but lack of true political progress in our country. Until our elected officials put their political ambitions aside and do the right thing because it is the right thing to do, the war will be all the harder to fight. Right now there are two fronts to the war on terror: one is where it should be: on the battle field, the other is in the hearts and minds of our fellow countrymen as their views about the war are skewed by the ineptness of our congressmen. If we could narrow the fronts down by half we would be able to win this war once and for all and do what everyone (no one more than the soldiers) wants to do: bring all the troops home.

Visit the senate’s website and find your senator`s phone number and then call them and urge them to support General Petraeus and the military as they are on the right path to victory.
